Emmy practically handed him the answer, laying it all out for him. She was ready for whatever he had to say—even if it was some surprise he’d been keeping from her. As long as he was honest, she could handle it.
But all she got back was the steady, slow rhythm of his breathing.
He’d fallen asleep.
A wave of frustration and disappointment got stuck somewhere in her chest, but all that came out was a quiet sigh.
Forget it. He must be completely worn out after these last few days.
She didn’t bother him again, just closed her eyes and tried to drift off.
The next morning, Emmy woke up feeling overheated, almost like she’d been sleeping next to a furnace. She blinked, half-awake, and found herself face-to-face with James, still out cold.
Sunlight slipped through the sheer curtains, painting soft lines across his face. Without his usual hard edges, he looked gentle—almost boyish in his sleep.
Clearly, he really had pushed himself too hard. Emmy’s heart softened at the sight.
She tried to quietly slip out of bed, but James moved on instinct, pulling her right back in without even opening his eyes.
He buried his face in the crook of her neck, about to nuzzle in even closer—then suddenly froze.
James’s eyes flew open. He shot upright, his voice rough and low from sleep.
“Hang on a sec.”
He tossed back the blanket and dashed into the bathroom.
A second later, she could hear the electric razor buzzing and water running as he got himself together.
Moments later, a freshly shaved and totally awake James climbed back into bed and wrapped her up in his arms, looking ridiculously pleased with himself.
He acted like a giant dog who’d just found his favorite toy, rubbing his smooth chin along her cheek and down to her collarbone. His lips, cool and minty from toothpaste, wandered over her skin, leaving little kisses that sent shivers through her.
Emmy felt a spark shoot straight up her spine. Maybe it was the long dry spell, or maybe pregnancy hormones were making her extra sensitive, but her body reacted before she could even think.
Her mom’s voice popped into her head, stern and clear. She braced herself and pushed at his chest.
“Let go, I need to get up.”
Instead, James just held her tighter, snuggling in like a kid who didn’t want to let go. His voice was soft and a little pitiful.
“Babe, let me kiss you a bit more. I promise, nothing else.”
Emmy lay there, trying to get her heart rate and her breathing under control.
She couldn’t believe how strong her own reaction had been.
It took her a while to finally calm down and let the heat fade from her cheeks.
She sat up, glancing at the frosted bathroom door.
The water was still going, like he was never coming out.
What is he doing in there, scrubbing off a layer of skin?
After half an hour with no sign of James, Emmy gave up. She got dressed and headed to the guest room to wash up.
Just as she stepped away from the bed, her phone buzzed on the nightstand.
The caller ID read “Mr. Sparrow.”
Emmy frowned but picked up anyway, swiping to answer.
