“Oh, listen to her! Did you hear that?”
Grandma lit up like she’d just found a treasure, patting Emmy’s hand excitedly before turning to holler at James.
“You lucky brat, what did you do in your last life to deserve a gem like her?”
“I swear, in all my years, I’ve never met a girl this thoughtful and sweet!”
“Girls these days—most of them only care about themselves. But Emmy? She always puts her husband first.”
“And you, young man, if you ever treat her wrong, just see if I don’t break your legs myself!”
James glanced at Emmy, his eyes sincere and full of affection.
“I really did marry the best woman.”
“Grandma, you can relax. I’ll take good care of her, I promise.”
Emmy’s face was burning from all the praise, but inside, she felt a burst of happiness she couldn’t hide. Figuring Grandma was practically family, she scooted closer and lowered her voice.
“Grandma, I’ve got something to tell you. I’m not just pregnant… I’m having twins.”
The smile on Grandma’s face froze for a split second.
She whipped her head around to look at James.
His easy expression tightened a little, but he didn’t say a word.
Grandma turned her attention back to Emmy, gripping her hand a little tighter.
“Sweetheart, are you sure… it’s twins?”
Emmy nodded, a bit confused.
“Yeah, Grandma. Is something wrong with that?”
Grandma patted her hand and her eyes softened.
“Of course not! Twins are a blessing—double the joy!”
She was grinning again, the momentary tension gone so fast it was easy to think you imagined it.
“I’m just worried about you. You’re so delicate—carrying one baby would be hard enough, but two? Those little ones are going to make you work for it by the end, you know.”
She stood off to the side, leaning on her cane, watching him quietly.
James went straight to the stove, washing the pot, filling it with water, turning on the heat—he knew exactly what to do.
Grandma broke the silence, her voice low but cutting right through.
“You didn’t want to check the babies’ gender because you’re worried about the same tragedy happening again, aren’t you?”
James’s broad back tensed.
Grandma tapped her cane against the floor.
“But hiding from it doesn’t change anything.”
“James, don’t forget—Jamie turned out just fine, didn’t she?”
“So all that old superstition is just nonsense. It never meant anything.”
“With who you are now, you can protect your children. You know you can.”
