Emmy didn’t want everyone knowing about her pregnancy, so she just nodded along.
“Yeah, I’ve been thinking about it.”
She kept her eyes down, quietly cutting into her foie gras. She didn’t notice the way Isabel’s smile faltered for a split second, or the strange look that flashed in her eyes.
When Emmy glanced up again, Isabel was back to looking warm and caring, like nothing had happened.
“Hey, have you ever heard the story about twins?” Isabel asked, sounding casual.
Emmy paused mid-bite, confused. “Twins? What do you mean?”
Isabel looked genuinely surprised. “Wait, your mom never told you? Isn’t this something your family worries about?”
Emmy just stared at her, totally lost. Isabel let out a sigh, leaned in a little, and lowered her voice.
“You’re trying to get pregnant now, right? You really need to be careful. If you accidentally end up with twins, a lot of wealthy families think that’s… unlucky. Not a good sign.”
She hesitated, then tried to sound reassuring. “But honestly, don’t stress too much. Twins are rare unless it runs in your family.”
Emmy just sat there, stunned. Suddenly, memories started rushing back.
The way those rich ladies at the hospital had suddenly avoided her, whispering behind her back. Her mom and grandma’s reactions when they found out—how their faces turned serious, almost worried, and how they insisted on going to the temple to pray.
And then there was James. The way he’d looked so tense during the ultrasound, the heaviness in his voice.
Did everyone know about this except her?
“Emmy? Emmy?”
Isabel’s voice snapped her out of it.
“Are you okay? You look pale, like you just saw a ghost.”
Isabel leaned in closer, her face full of concern. “I’m serious—does your husband’s family have that gene? You know, twins?”
Emmy felt her heart pounding, her chest tight. She shook her head, feeling completely lost.
She hung up, then tapped her screen and posted the photo she’d just taken with Emmy to her social feed, adding the caption: Heart-to-heart with my bestie. Such a good talk.
After that, she opened her messages with Jamie. The whole chat was just her sending messages, his last reply a cold “Busy” from last month.
Isabel didn’t know if he even bothered checking her posts. But she wanted him to see that she and Emmy were close. No matter how much he liked Emmy, he needed to remember where he stood.

Meanwhile, Emmy drove her Porsche back to Applewood Estate, clutching her phone as she scrolled through her contacts, desperate to find someone who could answer her questions about twins. But who could she even ask? Who would actually tell her the truth?
She sat in the car for a while, lost in thought, before finally getting out.
Just as she closed the door, a tall, sharp-looking man stepped out of her building. He was dressed in a crisp black suit, his expression cold, radiating a kind of don’t-come-near-me energy.
Dean.
What was he doing coming out of her building?
