Abriella stared, completely floored, almost wanting to laugh out loud.
Was this supposed to be a marriage proposal or were they just shopping for a baby-making machine?
She glanced instinctively at her parents, hoping—just maybe—they’d say something on her behalf.
But Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan didn’t look the slightest bit upset. If anything, they were nodding along eagerly.
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Rinehart, Abriella’s always been a good girl,” Mrs. Sullivan said with a smile. “She does whatever we tell her at home. I’m sure she’ll listen to you after she’s married, too.”
In that moment, Abriella’s heart felt like it had plunged straight into ice water.
She just didn’t get it.
She was their real daughter, yet they always acted like she was some kind of threat—always wary, always distant. And now, just for the family’s benefit, they were ready to throw her into this ridiculous mess.
Was it just because she hadn’t grown up with them? Or because she’d never learned to act sweet and clingy like Mandy?
Mandy, sitting nearby, was practically glowing with glee.
All the work she’d put in, pulling strings to find a high-profile family from another province, was finally about to pay off. If Abriella married into the Rineharts, the Sullivan business would get a foothold in Cloudville, and all those future resources? She’d be the one to benefit most.
Putting on a look of fake envy, Mandy piped up, “Wow, Abriella, you’re seriously lucky!”
“The Rineharts are Cloudville’s top family. Most girls wouldn’t even dream of getting through their gates.”
“And Mr. Rinehart fell for you at first sight. If you pull it off and give them twins, you’ll be the Rineharts’ number one hero. And our family gets to ride the wave, too!”
Off to the side, Emmy was already frowning, ready to jump in for Abriella. But before she could, Abriella spoke up herself.
She looked straight at Mandy, a smirk tugging at her lips.
“Why don’t you take this amazing opportunity, Mandy?”
Mandy’s smile froze.
The whole room fell silent.
Ignoring her, Abriella turned to Mrs. Rinehart, her voice steady and clear.
“Sorry, Mrs. Rinehart, but I already have a boyfriend.”
