Emmy scrolled through her phone, thumb gliding over the screen until she found the old file from Abriella. It was the deep-dive report Abriella had once pulled together on Evelina’s education. The degrees were real, sure, but the way Evelina got them was anything but clean.
Claudia hadn’t just thrown money around to get Evelina under that famous professor’s wing. She’d gone further, spending nights with the man, who was old enough to be her father, just to make it happen. The report even had some grainy photos. Blurry or not, you could still make out Claudia clinging to the professor’s arm, acting all cozy as they walked into a fancy hotel.
Maybe in the West, stuff like this didn’t always spark outrage. People liked to pretend professor-student flings were just part of the culture. No big deal, just one of those things that happened. But the problem wasn’t just the affair. Not this time. Claudia was the wife of a government official now, and for her, something like this would be a total scandal.
It was the kind of thing that could blow up everything. Even Ben might not look at her the same way after this.
A cold, satisfied smile played on Emmy’s lips. She checked the time. Nine thirty in the evening. Prime time for gossip to go viral, with everyone glued to their phones.
Without hesitation, she forwarded the file to Danny and sent a short message.

Done. Emmy flipped her phone face-down on the couch and stretched out, looking completely at ease. Her smile widened.
Claudia, this holiday season is going to be hell for you.
Starting tonight and every night until New Year’s, I’m sending you a special “gift.”
I hope you love every single one.
…
Two hours later.
#EvelinasMotherSleptHerWayToTheTop
The hashtag exploded, racing up the trending charts like it had a mind of its own. It even overtook #FugitiveEvelina, which was still hanging around the top spots.
Inside the Sparrow family’s mansion, the light from the crystal chandelier couldn’t cut through the heavy, anxious air.
Claudia stared at her phone, her face twisting as those filthy words and pictures burned into her brain. She almost passed out from sheer rage.
Evelina pressed a hand to her burning cheek, biting down on her lip so hard her hatred nearly spilled out in tears. Then something seemed to click in her mind. She choked out, “It’s Emmy. It has to be Emmy destroying my life. She signed that settlement. Why is she still doing this to me?”
“If you hadn’t run off, would she have gotten the chance?” Claudia shot back, her eyes empty except for disappointment. “You’re useless. Completely useless. You’ve ruined everything I’ve planned.”
She took a long, shaky breath, like she was finally accepting something she’d been dreading.
“There’s only one way to quiet things down now.”
Claudia bent down, locking eyes with Evelina.
“You’re going to prison.”
Evelina stared up at her, stunned. Her eyes went wide with panic.
“Mom… what are you saying? You want me… to go to prison?”
