Dean watched her fuming, but it only made him smile.
“All my misery… wasn’t it you and your daughter who started it?” His voice was calm, almost amused. “Did you really think I’d just let you off the hook?”
“We’re family now. The past doesn’t have to matter anymore.” Claudia tried to keep her voice steady. “If we work together, your father could become president. The kind of power we’d have… you can’t even imagine.”
“President?” Dean almost laughed, like it was the most ridiculous thing he’d ever heard. “You want a man who can’t even see the snake in his own bed to run a country?”
His eyes narrowed, sharp with contempt. “If he ever became president, it’d be a disaster for everyone.”
Claudia stared at him, disbelief written all over her face. “But… he’s your father.”
“So?”
Dean crushed his cigarette out, then stood, towering over her. “Just because he’s my father, I’m supposed to help him?”
Claudia was stunned. She’d never thought Dean could be this ruthless, this cold. It sent a fresh wave of panic through her. People like him only got more dangerous with time.
She took a shaky breath and tried to sound less confrontational. “Give me Eve. We can talk. Any terms, I’m open.”
Dean’s mouth curled into a slow, almost teasing smirk.
“Sure,” he said, drawing out the word. “Turn yourself in. Tell the police everything. How you killed my mother. What you did to Emmy. List every single crime, every dirty thing you’ve ever done.”
Claudia’s face went completely pale.
“You’re going too far.”
“Then we’re done here.” Dean shrugged, not even pretending to care. “You’ve got one day to think it over.”
“If you don’t turn yourself in, your precious daughter… well, she probably won’t survive.”
Just thinking about that made Dean’s grip on his phone tighten, his eyes darkening even more.
He was about to give up when the call finally connected.
“…Hello?”
A sleepy, slightly stuffy voice came through, soft and husky, like she’d just woken up. It was the kind of voice that sent a shiver down his spine, gentle and rough at the same time, like a cat’s paw brushing against his heart.
Dean forgot to breathe for a second. That sound, just her voice, sparked something wild and restless inside him. He yanked at his tie, swallowing hard, and finally managed to get out a rough question.
“You’re not with James?”
There was a pause. Emmy seemed confused, like she needed a moment to wake up and figure out what was happening.
