Teresa looked a little surprised but smiled gently. “You all deserve a proper holiday. I’m the one who kept you here longer than planned. If you’re in a rush, I’ll have the butler sort out your year-end bonus right now so you can head home early.”
Ivy’s eyes filled with tears. “Thank you, Madam. Thank you so much.”
But Emmy let go of her mother and sat up straighter, her face suddenly serious. “No. Ivy, you can’t leave.”
Memories of her past life flashed through Emmy’s mind, especially the terrible car accident that happened around this time. Ivy’s whole family had almost been killed, and Ivy herself lost both her legs.
Emmy quickly tried to come up with a reason. “Ivy, you promised you’d stay with me this year and wouldn’t go home. Besides, I haven’t finished embroidering the letter on that scarf yet. I still need your help.”
Ivy’s voice trembled. “Miss, I’m sorry… It’s my husband. He fell off a ladder while pruning the orchard. He’s in the hospital now, and I want to go see him…”
Ivy had worked here for years, while her husband ran a big orchard back in their hometown. They didn’t get to spend much time together, but their relationship was strong.
Teresa’s face changed when she heard the news. “Oh no, you should go see him right away. Is he alright?”
Emmy shook her head. “No, Ivy. You can’t go. Not this time.”
Everyone looked at her in confusion as Emmy got up and walked over to Ivy, taking her hand. “I’ll send someone to bring your husband here to the Capital for treatment. I’ll cover all the costs. Please just stay here with me. Don’t go anywhere.”
The hospitals in the Capital were so much better than anything in the countryside.
Ivy looked stunned, then her eyes filled with tears again. “Miss… I can’t… That’s too much to ask…”
Teresa still didn’t understand why her daughter was so insistent, but seeing Emmy so serious, she quickly agreed. “Let’s do what Emmy says. I’ll arrange everything right away. Ivy, don’t say no.”
She told the butler to pay Ivy her bonus and even added an extra twenty thousand.
Ivy clutched the thick envelope, tears streaming down her face as she kept thanking them.
Just then, a car engine sounded outside. James was finally home.
The car drove straight to a private courtyard inside the facility.
As soon as they stepped out, they saw an elderly woman with silvery hair standing at the gate, leaning on her cane and peering out, waiting for them.
“Grandma!” Emmy hurried over and grabbed her cold hand. “It’s freezing. Why are you standing outside? Let’s go in.”
The old woman’s cloudy eyes filled with tears the moment she saw Emmy. She clung tightly to Emmy’s hand, unwilling to let go. “You made it… I didn’t think I’d ever see you again…”
“Granddaughter, Grandma thought… I’d never get to see you again…”
Emmy and Teresa flanked her, gently helping her inside.
Warm air rushed to meet them, chasing away the cold.
Emmy helped her grandma out of her heavy coat, but the old woman just held on to her hand, refusing to let go.
