James listened quietly, his dark eyes softening with a gentle warmth.
“Sounds like Grandma really gave you a lot to think about.”
“You got this. I believe in you.”
Emmy nodded with determination. “I will.”
“I’ll finish up my work and come home,” James promised. “I’m not going back to the base before the holiday. I want to stay here and spend time with you.”
Emmy’s face lit up. “That’s amazing! I’ll be waiting for you at home.”
…
That night, the bedroom was soaked in the cozy glow of a single lamp on the nightstand. Everything felt warm and close.
Emmy lay on her side, her oversized nightgown bunched up around her waist, her pregnant belly round and soft. James knelt beside the bed, pouring a little stretch mark oil into his palm. He massaged her belly with slow, careful hands, completely focused on her.
The room was quiet until James spoke. His voice was low, a little rough.
“You and Dean… was it really just a regular relationship?”
Emmy froze for a second.
He was asking again. The second time.
There was no way she could tell him the truth about living her life all over again. It was too unbelievable.
She tipped her head back, looking up at his face, the light tracing the strong lines of his jaw. “Are you… really that bothered by him?”
James kept moving his hands, but his eyes went dark, like a storm rolling in over the ocean.
“When you had a fever, you called out his name.”
His words were calm, but Emmy could hear the jealousy and hurt behind them.
“What?” She shot upright, completely shocked. “No way! I would never call his name!”
Desperate to prove herself, she grabbed her phone, unlocked it in a flash, and pulled up her contacts.
“See? I’ve already blocked and deleted him. If you don’t believe me, check for yourself. He’s not in there, anywhere!”
James couldn’t help but smile a little at how frantic she was.
He gently eased her back down on the bed with a sigh.
Never again, he promised himself.
…
The next morning, Emmy showed up to breakfast with swollen, puffy eyes.
Teresa was laying out food on the table. The moment she saw Emmy, her eyebrows shot up and she shot a sharp glare at James, who looked sheepish behind her.
Teresa assumed James had been careless with her pregnant daughter.
“Emmy’s expecting now. Things aren’t like they used to be,” she said, her voice full of warning as she eyed her son-in-law. “You have to be gentle.”
James scratched his nose, looking embarrassed.
Emmy hurried over, wrapping her arm around her mom and tattling right away.
“Mom, James bullied me!”
“He accused me of calling out Dean’s name when I had a fever! Why would I ever say that? Just thinking about it made me cry all night.”
Teresa was completely speechless.
