Three days later.
Emmy and her group hit the road bright and early. James kept insisting he wasn’t worried, but he still sent Will along to watch over her. Abriella didn’t want to be left behind in the Capital, so she tagged along too.
What was supposed to be a simple business trip now looked more like a parade. Along with four professional bodyguards, there was Will, Abriella, and Krystina, her newest business partner. Emmy hadn’t traveled with such a lively crew in ages. The energy was infectious, and her spirits lifted.
They reached Rochefield by afternoon. When Emmy glanced out the window, she breathed in the crisp, fresh air that always lingers after a snowfall. The mountains in the distance were still capped with snow, glowing gold in the late sun. It was the kind of view you’d see on a postcard.
Sylvia had already arranged everything. They checked into the best hotel in town, a historic estate that had been turned into a boutique inn. Every corner had a story, every courtyard looked like it belonged in a movie. But Emmy noticed something odd. From the parking lot to the lobby, and all the way to their suite, she kept spotting people who seemed to be just passing by or working as staff. Their posture was too steady, their eyes too alert. Emmy could tell right away—these were plainclothes security, not regular employees.
This wasn’t the kind of setup you’d see for just anyone.
That evening, Sylvia hosted a welcome dinner in the hotel’s signature restaurant. The food was amazing, and after a few drinks, Emmy turned to Sylvia and asked, as if it was just a passing thought, “Sylvia, is there someone important staying in Rochefield right now?”
Sylvia lowered her voice and leaned in, her face serious but mysterious. “Actually, yes. Someone really big.”
She glanced around, then whispered, “A minister from the central cabinet. The head of the Nelson family, Jared.”
Emmy froze, her water glass halfway to her lips. She couldn’t believe it.
A small, confident smile spread across her lips. She looked at Abriella and said, “Don’t worry. I’ve heard he’s actually pretty down-to-earth.”
Abriella shot her a look. “Down-to-earth? Emmy, I think your idea of ‘down-to-earth’ might need some work.”
Sylvia jumped in, nodding. “No, really, Mr. Nelson is surprisingly approachable. He came here right before the holidays to help with the poverty relief effort. He visited every family, went door to door, and even spent New Year’s with the people here. For someone in his position, he’s not stuck-up at all.”
Then her expression turned serious again. “He’s coming to the factory tour tomorrow, after the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The level of government support our project gets will pretty much depend on what he decides. So, Ms. Eincoln, tomorrow is a big deal.”
