Abriella stood there, completely stunned.

This was the first time she’d ever seen the legendary head of the Nelson family up close.

All the stories she’d heard from Steve painted him as this unpredictable tyrant, the kind of man who could drive his own son out of the house and leave another in a wheelchair. But right now, looking at him, she couldn’t help but think he seemed… almost approachable?

Abriella pressed up to the glass, heart pounding as she watched Emmy and Jared sitting across from each other. She couldn’t hear a thing, which somehow made her even more anxious.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket.

James: Got it.

Abriella blinked at the screen. That was it? No questions, no panic? Wasn’t he even a little worried? This was his psycho dad they were talking about.

“My daughter-in-law is pregnant too, about as far along as you. This project is my way of hoping for a little good luck for my future grandchild. So you, as the key person here, have to stay safe and see this through.”

On the surface, it sounded like he cared, but there was a definite note of warning and expectation in his voice.

Emmy blinked, surprised by the coincidence.

She met Jared’s eyes, her own gaze steady and bright, and gave him a calm, unflinching smile.
