Even with her baby bump showing, she walked like she owned the place, calm and steady with every step. She turned her head and started chatting, totally at ease, with a man whose presence made everyone else feel like they had to hold their breath. She talked about everything from the logic behind AI chip algorithms to how the sensors in the smart farm equipment worked. Her explanations were sharp and confident, and she made it all sound so simple.
Sunlight poured in through the tall factory windows, wrapping her in a soft glow. Her gentle features seemed to shine with this brilliant, magnetic energy that only true tech geniuses have. In that moment, there was nothing delicate or fragile about her. She was in her element. The cool confidence she gave off was even stronger than it had been at the competition.
Juan was floored. He couldn’t help but stare, caught up in the moment, his feet moving on their own as he drifted closer.
He watched as she and the big shot stopped in front of a piece of equipment. Finally, there was a gap in their conversation. Maybe this was his chance.
Juan stepped up, putting on his best business smile. “Mr. Nelson, hello. I’m Juan Carter, CEO of Starlight Corporation. I’ve heard so much about you, it’s an honor to finally meet—”
Emmy frowned, just a little.
Jared barely glanced at him. His eyes stayed on the machine. His voice was cool but not unfriendly. “We’re just here to see the equipment. Nothing else.”
And with that, he walked away, heading for the next area.
Emmy stepped smoothly around Juan to follow Jared, not missing a beat.
Juan’s hand hung in the air, awkward and ignored. He let it fall, trying to hide how weird he felt. The whole group moved after Emmy and Jared, leaving Juan standing there alone.
Even the national news crew, busy filming every move Jared made, swept right past Juan without a second look.
He watched, face tight, then finally followed at the back of the crowd. He saw the news camera turn to Jared and Emmy, the pregnant woman who somehow still managed to light up the whole place. Not a single camera bothered with him, the actual CEO of Starlight Corporation.
Juan could already see how this would go. Once the footage hit the news, Emmy’s presence at Starlight was going to eclipse his. He was supposed to be in charge. How was this happening?
The reply was instant—a thirty-second voice message. Juan played it, listening to his grandpa’s barely contained excitement.
“Juan! This is a huge opportunity! Be careful with everything you say and do in front of him. Don’t mess it up! Get your face out there. Even if he just remembers your name, that’s a massive connection for our family and the whole company. You understand?”
Juan smiled to himself as he typed back. Don’t worry, Grandpa. I’ll make the most of it.
He paused, then added, Already spoke with Mr. Nelson, actually.
His grandpa replied right away. Good! I’m proud of you. You did the Carter family proud!
Juan locked his phone, feeling a little better. The sting of being ignored wasn’t gone, but it didn’t hurt quite as much.
