Emmy found herself getting hungry all the time lately, needing a snack every couple of hours. Luckily, their RV had everything she could want, and if she ever got tired, she could just flop down and nap.
Abriella, meanwhile, had given up all pretense of acting proper. She was sprawled across Will’s lap like a lazy cat, totally relaxed.
“Babe, I want another orange. Can you peel one for me?” she whined.
“And pick the sweetest one!”
Will just laughed, shaking his head, but he started peeling a mandarin for her anyway. The two of them were so smitten with each other, shamelessly flirting and being cute, that Krystina and Danny could barely stand it. They shot each other a look and decided to talk about work instead, leaving the lovebirds to their own world.
The RV kept rolling until they made it to the orchard Ivy’s husband ran. Emmy had come prepared, bringing a bunch of gifts for Ivy’s family. Will and Danny helped her carry everything inside.
Ivy hadn’t been discharged yet and was still recovering at the hospital back in the Capital. After Emmy explained why she was there, Ivy’s daughter-in-law quickly fetched a box from one of the rooms, apologizing over and over as she handed it over. Emmy finally got the scarf she’d come for.
They didn’t stick around long, heading straight back to the Capital.
On the drive back, the scarf became the star of the show. Will couldn’t stop turning it over in his hands, his face full of awe.
“Wow, you’re seriously talented! This is better than anything you could buy in a store.”
Abriella snatched it from him, grinning. “Emmy, your knitting skills are getting out of control! This scarf is so soft and pretty. When James gets it, he’ll probably be over the moon.”
Will looked at Abriella, eyes pleading, like a big dog begging for treats. It took her a second, but then she got it and burst out laughing. She leaned over and planted a noisy kiss on his cheek.
“Just wait,” she said, giving his chest a proud pat. “I’m way better than Emmy. I’ll knit you a hat that no one else in the world has.”
Will’s ears went bright red and a goofy smile spread across his face. He nodded so hard it looked like his head might fall off.
The rest of the group shivered, looking away. The couple was so sweet it was almost too much.
By the time they made it back to Moonlight Bay, it was nearly midnight. Emmy had slept for most of the drive, so she was feeling surprisingly awake.
“I... I’ve got something to do too. See ya!” Danny said, making a quick escape.
In an instant, everyone scattered, moving faster than rabbits.
Only Krystina was left, standing there awkwardly with the bag holding the scarf. She looked like she couldn’t decide whether to leave or stay.
Just then, a little voice piped up from the yard.
“Mommy’s home!”
Ollie came barreling out like a cannonball, launching himself straight into Krystina’s arms.
Snapping out of her daze, Emmy felt her cheeks burn. She quickly stepped out of James’s embrace, smoothing down her clothes, only for James to catch her hand and hold it tight, their fingers laced together with no space between them.
