“He’s my youngest son.”
Her voice was cool and dismissive, every word laced with icy superiority. “He grew up outside the family, so he’s a little wild. But the Nelson family needs new blood. We need him to carry on the main line.”
“So, your daughter marrying my son… it’s just something that benefits us both.”
“When the baby is born, it’ll stay with the Nelson family. We’ll give your Drennon family more wealth and status than you could ever imagine. Consider it compensation.”
“As for the title of Mrs. Nelson,” Mrs. Nelson smiled with open contempt, “that’s only for women from families equal to ours.”
Teresa felt her mind shatter.
Humiliation, anger, heartbreak. All of it hit her at once, crashing over her like a wave.
She forgot Mrs. Summer’s warning. She forgot where she was. She only felt the heat of rage burning through her, making her whole body shake.
“The Drennon family isn’t high society. We know we can’t reach your world.”
“But…” Her eyes were red, fixed on Mrs. Nelson. “My daughter isn’t some broodmare for the Nelsons. And my grandchild will never be raised by you.”
Mrs. Nelson clearly hadn’t expected Teresa to stand up to her. Her face darkened on the spot.
“Exactly as I thought. Small family, small mind. No self-control.”
“Do you really think you can use a child to latch onto the Nelsons? Teresa, I’m telling you how it is. This isn’t a negotiation.”
She stepped closer, glaring down at Teresa.
“With what little your Drennon family has, you dare try to fight us for the child?”
Teresa clenched her jaw.
She knew it was true.
How could she go up against the Nelsons?
That painful reality left her cold, hollow, hopeless.
She never would have guessed James, the firefighter she trusted, was actually a Nelson heir.
And she never dreamed that his marriage to her daughter was just a scheme to keep their bloodline going.
A servant appeared, carrying a velvet tray.
It gleamed with an entire set of gorgeous emerald jewelry.
Mrs. Nelson’s face softened again, as if nothing had happened.
“I don’t want James knowing about this meeting.”
She nodded at the servant.
Understanding, the servant hurried forward with the tray.
She was already trapped in this house, blamed for what happened to Emmy even though she was the victim. Her husband and son both blamed her.
If Emmy had the baby and joined the Nelsons, would Mrs. Nelson still have her place as head of the family?
Teresa stormed out of the suffocating tea room, hurried through the greenhouse, and practically ran to her car.
She yanked the door open, slid inside, and was about to tell the driver to leave when the servant rushed up, still holding the tray.
The woman swung the door open, set the tray on the little table, and gave Teresa a pleading smile.
“Please, Mrs. Drennon, just take it. Don’t make things harder for us servants. And honestly, this set is worth a fortune. It’ll look great on you.”
With that, she shut the door and hurried off.
Teresa’s chest rose and fell with anger. She snapped at the driver.
“Get this out of my car.”
The driver jumped out, but the heavy iron gates were already closed.
Teresa looked up at the security camera above the entrance and said coldly,
“Leave it at the gate.”
The driver hesitated, then did as she said, placing the velvet tray right in front of the Nelsons’ locked gates.
