The next morning brought soft sunlight and clear skies. Emmy finished her check-up with Abriella by her side, and as soon as they stepped off the elevator onto her floor, she spotted a man in a crisp suit waiting outside her hospital room. It was Juan.
He was holding a huge bouquet, all bright colors and fancy ribbons. When he heard their footsteps, he turned, his eyes landing right on her.
“I heard you’re in the hospital. Are you feeling any better?” he asked.
Emmy’s face went cold. She didn’t bother with small talk.
“I’ll be discharged soon. I’m sure a busy man like you has more important things to do than check on me, Mr. Carter.”
She walked right past him and pushed open her door. Abriella followed close behind.
Juan hesitated for a second, then came in after them. He set the bouquet on the dining table, took a folder from his assistant, and handed it to Emmy.
“I actually came to bring some good news.”
Emmy took the folder and flipped through it, barely glancing at the pages. Her brow furrowed. It was a project contract, finalized with Summer Inc. At the last page, Isabel’s signature stared up at her.
She looked up, frowning. “When did you and Isabel start working together?”
Juan looked pleased with her reaction, a smug little smile tugging at his lips.
“What’s wrong? I just landed a huge project for the company, but you don’t seem happy at all.” He leaned in, lowered his voice, and grinned. “Are you… jealous?”
Before Emmy could reply, Abriella let out a snort of laughter.
Juan shot her a glare. “What’s so funny?”
“I’m just amazed at how funny you are, Mr. Carter,” Abriella shot back, arms crossed. “Emmy’s agricultural project was just featured on national TV and got listed as a top state-supported initiative. Do you really think she’d be jealous over a single deal? Honestly, I think you’re the one feeling threatened, so you brought this contract over just to get some attention.”
Her words hit their mark. Juan’s face darkened, and his voice shot up.
With that, she kicked off her shoes, turned on her side, and pulled the covers up. She didn’t even try to hide that she wanted him gone.
Juan’s smile faltered for a second, but he quickly put his confident mask back on.
“Rest well,” he said, then left the room, looking oddly satisfied.
…
That afternoon, Emmy no longer needed her IV. Around lunchtime, she went to the bathroom. When she came back, the flashy bouquet Juan had brought was gone. In its place was a new arrangement wrapped in simple, pale paper. The flowers were a deep, mysterious blue, their petals layered like pieces of the night sky sinking into the sea. The air filled with a cool, gentle scent she’d never smelled before. It was a variety she didn’t recognize.
Something about the bouquet was so calm and elegant, she felt her heart settle just looking at it.
Emmy paused, her gaze lingering on the flowers. Then she turned and saw a tall figure standing quietly by her bedside.
