“I can help you get the shares.”
Her hand drifted to her belly, gentle and protective. Her eyes softened for a moment, then turned steady and unshakable.
“But these two children… I want to raise them myself.”
Tyler’s smile faded. He hesitated, voice careful. “They are Nelson family children, after all. I’m just not sure that…”
Before he could finish, Emmy cut him off, her voice cool.
“Right now, Mr. Nelson, you’re the one coming to me for help.”
Her gaze locked onto his, sharp and unwavering.
“If you can’t even promise me this, there’s no way I’m signing over those shares.”
“Whether you get your revenge or not doesn’t really matter to me.”
Tyler’s expression turned cold. One moment, he thought she was being reasonable. The next, he realized just how stubborn she could be. No wonder James had kept putting this off, too nervous to come deal with her himself.
Tyler took a breath and decided to risk it.
“Emmy,” he said, voice a little harder now, “since you’re not willing to help James get his revenge, I’ll make sure he hears every word of this conversation. I’ll let him know exactly where you stand. Maybe then he’ll finally give up on you.”
Emmy was just about to get up. She paused, just for a second. Then she straightened her back.
“It’s not that I won’t help. It’s that you, Mr. Nelson, won’t give me any assurance.”
With that, she turned and walked toward the door.
Tyler’s face darkened even more. He couldn’t believe Emmy would be so cold, willing to throw James aside just for the sake of her own children. It really seemed like James meant nothing to her anymore. That would make everything that came next a lot harder.
But right now, he needed those shares.
“Fine, I agree,” he called out, just as she was about to step out of the room.
Outside, city lights flashed past the window. Tyler narrowed his eyes, thoughtful.
Love was always the weakest link on the road to revenge. It was never armor, only a soft spot that could drag you down. He had to snap James out of it. He needed him to hear, with his own ears, just how cold Emmy was when she bargained with him, treating everything like a transaction.
Emmy wasn’t worth any of his feelings.
Being a Nelson meant living in the middle of a storm. If you wanted to get through it, you had to cut off your emotions first. If your heart wasn’t hard enough, you’d never survive. That was a lesson Tyler had learned the hard way.
…
Meanwhile, back at the old house at Moonlight Bay, Emmy closed the bedroom door behind her and locked it. She walked over to the desk, tossed the manila envelope down, and pulled a recorder from her pocket too.
She’d come prepared.
What she wanted was a record of Tyler’s promise about the children, in case he tried to back out later. She hadn’t expected to capture so much more.
