James absently rubbed his chin as he listened to the call. He’d just shaved yesterday, but the stubble was already back, rough under his fingers. The tension from the past few days clung to him, making every muscle ache with fatigue he couldn’t shake.
All he wanted was to see his wife, to hear her voice. He didn’t want her to see him looking this worn out. So he kept his voice low and steady, “Point the camera at yourself first.”
Emmy went quiet.
Just like that, the conversation circled back to the very beginning. They both held their phones, stubborn as ever. One camera was aimed at a blank white ceiling, the other at a spotless white door. Neither of them wanted to be the first to show their face, yet both of them wanted nothing more than to see the other.
The stalemate hung in the air, but neither one could bring themselves to end the call. They’d waited too long for this moment.
Eventually, Emmy was the one to break the silence. She changed the subject, her voice a little hesitant. “Can you trust Tyler?”
James paused, thinking. Since she already knew so much, there was no point hiding the Nelson family’s secrets anymore.
He finally said, “The reason Tyler came to you this time was partly to help me get Grandma’s shares.”
“But honestly, what he wants more is the head of the family’s shares.”
Emmy frowned, confused.
James kept going. “Grandma set a rule a long time ago, to keep things fair between me and Tyler. No matter how we get our shares, we have to keep them equal. The Nelson family can’t favor one of us over the other.”
“So if I get shares from Grandma, Tyler is entitled to get an equal amount from the head of the family.”
Emmy was surprised, but she had to admit, Grandma was smart. This way, the brothers wouldn’t fight over the shares, and it forced them to work together instead of against each other.
But Emmy quickly caught something else. “But didn’t you just say you were planning to get shares from the head of the family?”
“I didn’t tell Tyler. I didn’t want him messing up my plans.”
Suddenly, everything clicked for Emmy. Tyler had come to her first because he wanted more shares for himself. But what stunned her even more was that James had started changing his plans for her sake, all the way back last year.
Every word he said felt like it left a mark on her heart. Emmy’s chest felt warm and tight, brimming with emotion. Tears welled up before she could stop them.
She tried to speak, but her voice broke, thick with tears. She couldn’t help herself; she sounded almost pouty as she repeated her plea. “James, let me see you.”
There was a long pause on the other end before James replied, his voice low and steady.
“I’ll come to you. You can see me in person, as long as you want.”
