James glanced down at her hand still holding his arm, his throat tightening for a second.
“That’s Cadence. She was Grandma’s protégé,” he said, keeping his tone gentle. “She’s the Nelson family’s financial manager now. And just so you know, she’s single. Not married.”
Tyler rolled his wheelchair closer, chiming in, “She’s also the lead researcher in Dad’s think tank, basically his most trusted advisor. She learned everything Grandma knew, and then some. Dad owes a lot to her.”
Cadence was already close. Her face stayed calm, almost unreadable. She gave the brothers a polite nod, then headed straight into the old lady’s bedroom without missing a beat.
She had a kind of quiet strength, like nothing could ever throw her off.
Emmy couldn’t take her eyes off her.
She’d always admired Cadence from afar, even in her last life. Now, seeing her up close, she felt like a fangirl who’d just met her idol. Her heart raced.
James noticed the look in her eyes and felt a strange tightness in his chest.
He blurted out, “You really admire her, don’t you?”
Emmy startled, snapping out of her daze. Only then did she realize how obvious she’d been. She quickly let go of his arm, wiped every trace of emotion from her face, and took a step away, putting some distance between them.
She didn’t answer his question.
James looked away, disappointment flickering in his eyes.
A few moments later, Cadence stepped out of the bedroom, holding a stack of documents. Her expression was still all business.
“A few years ago, Madam made a statement that her ten percent of Nelson Corporation shares would be split evenly among her great-grandchildren,” she said, voice level and clear. “But she recently changed it. Now, the new Mrs. Nelson and the two great-grandchildren will inherit it together. Mrs. Nelson, you get four percent. The boys each get three.”
She paused, her eyes moving over everyone in the room.
“These are the official documents. Mr. Nelson, Mrs. Nelson, please take a look.”
She handed the papers to James first.
