The car rolled into the underground garage, but with the elevator system newly upgraded, she couldn't get to Abriella's floor. Out of options, she called Abriella and asked her to come down.
Abriella picked up with a level of excitement that felt almost over the top. “Emmy! You’re finally back at Applewood Estate? That’s amazing! I’ll be right there!”
When Emmy stepped into the spacious apartment, the first thing she saw was Will sprawled on the sofa. His arms and legs were wrapped in bandages, and his usually neat buzz cut had been scorched into a mess of uneven, springy curls.
Abriella couldn't stop laughing. She pointed at Will, grinning. “Emmy, look at him. I swear, he’s even cuter like this.”
Will’s handsome face turned bright red. He wanted to argue but clearly didn’t stand a chance.
Emmy watched them with a helpless smile, but inside she felt a sharp pang of regret. If she’d known Will would get hurt this badly, maybe she should have explained the villa fire more clearly. But if she had, how could she ever explain how she knew about it in the first place? Sometimes, no matter how many chances you get, you just can’t make everything right.
Abriella called the chef to start on dinner, then dragged Emmy over to chat. They were deep in conversation when Will brought up the gun again. Emmy reached into her bag and pulled out the silver pistol.
Will’s eyes narrowed as he took it. His fingers moved quickly, and in just a few clicks, the complicated gun came apart into a neat pile of pieces in his hands. Just as fast, he put it all back together. The whole thing took less than a minute.
“This is a custom pistol,” Will told her, handing it back. “The bullets are custom too. Usually, to stop people from misusing it, they engrave the owner’s initials on the bullets.” He looked at her. “Were there any bullets?”
Emmy shook her head. “Ollie found it empty.”
The doorbell rang. Abriella gave a mischievous little smile. “I’ll get it.”
Emmy wondered who it could be. She heard the door open and then Abriella’s cheerful voice floated in. “James! You didn’t have to bring all this.”
Instantly, Emmy’s brows pulled together. She couldn’t help glancing toward the door.
James came in, dressed in simple black. The cut of his clothes made him look even taller and leaner. His hair was still damp, like he’d just stepped out of the shower. As he got closer, a fresh, clean scent filled the room, making Emmy’s heart skip a beat.
