Jared kept his eyes fixed on her, his gaze so intense it felt like he could see right through her. After a long pause, he broke into a smile.

“But being too clever isn’t always a good thing.”

He leaned in, and the pressure he gave off was almost overwhelming. You could feel just how used he was to being in charge.

“I know you want both kids with you, to raise them yourself.”

“But you must realize the Nelson family would never let their bloodline just drift away out there.”

As Emmy listened, she couldn’t help but let a faint, almost mocking smile play at her lips.

“What about James, then?”

“Why was he the exception? Why was he on his own for over twenty years?”

Jared’s face darkened. Emmy realized, a heartbeat too late, that she’d spoken out of turn. She hadn’t meant to say it, it just came out, because she felt it was unfair to James.

“If that’s the case, then live your life with him. The Nelson family will make sure you’re treated well.”

Emmy looked right back at him, her eyes calm, not a hint of emotion showing.

“He lied to me. He used me. He kept things from me. What exactly should I be holding on to?”

“I just hope our partnership, Mr. Nelson, won’t be affected by personal issues.”

She paused, leaning in a bit, her tone sincere.

“If you really want to help, please talk to him. Convince him to go through with the divorce.”

“I know it’s not easy to divorce a soldier, but if he files for it himself, there’s a chance.”

Jared blinked, just for a second, like she’d actually surprised him. He studied her again, more carefully this time.

“You really want to divorce him?”

Emmy met his gaze, steady and unafraid.

“Of course. I’m sure you’ve already had someone look into me, so you should know the truth.”

“I never forgave Dean for what he did, and I won’t forgive James for lying to me either.”

Her words were calm, but they made Jared’s frown deepen.
