Lorraine’s voice floated in from outside the door.

Emmy pulled herself out of her thoughts and gently placed the household booklet and her bracelet back into the safe. Her days were packed from start to finish now. Between work and Lorraine’s carefully planned exercise and yoga routines, there wasn’t much room left for anything else. Maybe that was a good thing. At least she didn’t have time to dwell on James.

It was late. The study was still lit, and Emmy was at her computer, fingers moving quickly across the keyboard. Lorraine came in with a mug of warm milk, watching her with a mix of worry and resignation.

“Ma’am, it’s really late. You should get some sleep.”

“Almost done,” Emmy said, not looking up.

A knock sounded at the door, and the housekeeper walked in. “Miss, we found out who tampered with the surveillance cameras.”

Emmy’s hands stilled above the keyboard.

“It was an engineer from the Department of Public Works. At first he wouldn’t say a word, no matter what we tried. But on my way back, I ran into the young master. He stepped in, asked just a couple of questions, and the engineer confessed. He said Mr. Sparrow put him up to it.”

Emmy’s eyes grew cold, a trace of sarcasm flickering across her face. Dean. He never told the truth, did he?

“Alright, I understand.” Her voice was calm, almost indifferent.

The next day, Danny came by for some documents. He glanced at the thick AI prosthetics proposal on her desk. “Ms. Lincoln, should I take this to Mr. Sparrow now?”

Emmy didn’t hand over the document. Instead, she pulled a much slimmer folder from the printer.

“Take this one to Mr. Sparrow.”

Danny hesitated, then took it. The difference in thickness was obvious. Ms. Lincoln was holding back the most important parts of the project. He didn’t question it. He just nodded.
