Ollie had no clue that the gun he was holding was just a toy, even though it looked completely real.

From the little phone on his wrist, James’s deep voice came through, with a hint of laughter in it.

“Did she say anything?”

“Reporting, James!” Ollie straightened up right away. “Emmy just asked how many new toys you gave me, and then she tried to send me off to kindergarten. I don’t want to go to kindergarten! James, when can you take me to your secret base? I want to play with real guns, the ones that go pew pew pew!”

“When your mom comes back, I’ll talk to her about it.”

“Yes!” Ollie almost jumped up with excitement, but quickly remembered to cover his mouth and lower his voice. “Got it! Knight Ollie, waiting for the next mission!”

James played along, keeping his tone serious. “Mission complete. Stay undercover, Knight Ollie.”

“Roger!”

Ollie hung up, hugged his toy gun, and instantly picked out the smart robot in the yard as his enemy. He started running around, making sound effects with his mouth, completely lost in his own world.

Watching him, Emmy couldn’t help but smile. The pure joy on Ollie’s face was infectious. She closed the window, went back to her desk, and got to work.

Two days went by.

It was afternoon, the usual time to pick up Ollie from kindergarten.

But this time, Danny came back alone. The moment he walked into the study, he asked, “Ms. Lincoln, did you send someone else to pick up Ollie?”

Emmy looked up from her screen, surprised. “No, you always pick him up, don’t you?”

Danny’s face turned serious in an instant.

“When I went to get him, the teacher said someone else had already picked Ollie up, earlier this afternoon.”

“If it wasn’t someone you sent, then who was it?”

A cold wave of panic swept over Emmy. Her heart pounded painfully, and she felt a sense of dread settle in her chest.

“Check the security cameras at the kindergarten, now. Find out who took Ollie!”

Danny didn’t hesitate. He spun around and ran out.

A few minutes later, Emmy’s phone rang. “It’s bad, Ms. Lincoln. Ollie’s father took him. We can’t reach them at all.”

Emmy’s brow furrowed tight with worry.

She thought she had everything covered. She had sent Krystina away, she had bodyguards. It all seemed so safe.

But she’d forgotten one thing. There was still a child between them.

She hung up and immediately dialed Krystina’s number.
