Krystina’s chest throbbed with pain, so sharp it stole her breath. A bitter, metallic taste filled her mouth as she pressed a hand over her heart, desperate for air. The bodyguard’s face turned pale. He rushed to steady her, voice trembling with concern. “Ms. Carter, are you all right?”
It took her a while to catch her breath and steady herself. She pushed him away, voice rough and barely more than a whisper. “Get out.”
He hesitated. “Ms. Lincoln told me not to leave you alone, not even for a second.”
“I said get out.” Her words came out as a hoarse shout, her red, swollen eyes fixed on Henry.
The bodyguard recognized she was on the edge and reluctantly stepped out, quietly closing the door behind him. The room fell silent, just the two of them now.
Krystina felt herself go numb, her mind settling into a cold emptiness, the kind that comes when you have nothing left to lose. She walked to the sofa and sat down.
Seeing her calm, Henry grabbed the divorce papers and tossed them onto the coffee table. “Sign them,” he said, sounding like he expected her to obey without question. “You’ve already moved your team into Starlight Corporation, and Riverdale’s in your vice president’s hands. You might as well hand it over to me. I’ll take it from here.”
He smirked. “Don’t forget, I helped you pick this location in the first place.”
Krystina let out a laugh, cold and hollow, her cheeks still streaked with tears. “Keep dreaming. You’re not getting the company.”
She met his gaze, her eyes sharp and cutting. “I took my team to Starlight to chase bigger opportunities. And you? What makes you think you could run a company?”
Henry’s face darkened. He glared at her, voice rising. “See? You never respected me. From the beginning, you thought I was useless. You keep saying I changed, but you were the first to get tired of me. You kept me locked away at home, never let me near the company. I’m a man, Krystina. Why should I have to rely on a woman to live?”
Krystina listened, her laughter breaking through her tears. The man she’d given everything to was now accusing her of humiliating him.
“You’re right,” she said, voice icy. “You really are useless. All you do is burn through my money, pretending you have some kind of life. I let you into the company, remember? Every project you touched turned to chaos. I was the one left to clean up after you. You’re just a leech, always keeping score of what a woman gives you.”
A loud crack snapped through the air as Henry slapped her, hard. Her head jerked to the side, blood spilling from her lip. For a moment, she was stunned, cheek burning and ears ringing.
