James acted like he hadn’t heard a word, his face set in stone as he marched forward, holding her hand so tightly it almost hurt.
Still, even as he pulled her along, his steps were careful and slow, matching her pace so she wouldn’t fall behind.
They were nearly out of the alley, coming up on the nursing home’s entrance, when James suddenly stopped. He seemed to snap back to reality, turning to look at her as if just realizing she was there.
“Did you say something to me just now?”
Before Emmy could answer, he kept talking, his voice flat and distant, more like he was reciting facts than sharing anything personal.
“Grandma’s condition is really serious. The clarity you saw just now was because of a special shot they gave her. Every time she has one of those lucid moments, it drains what little time she has left. Fast.”
He hadn’t expected his grandmother, who always seemed so confused, to remember Jamie after all this time. And he definitely hadn’t expected her to call Brian and Martha. Turns out, even his grandma had secrets she never shared with him.
Emmy stared at him, shocked, her brow furrowing as her heart twisted with worry.
Micah was already waiting, the black SUV parked at the end of the alley. James opened the door for her, his big hand hovering protectively over her head so she wouldn’t bump it on the way in. His presence surrounded her, heavy with a sadness she couldn’t quite describe.
Emmy slid into the seat, then glanced back at him, searching for something—anything—to say.
“You…”
She wanted to ask him not to go back, to come home with her instead, but before she could get the words out, James had already closed the door. He turned away, striding back toward the nursing home without looking back even once.
Emmy frowned, watching through the window as the car started to move. She kept her eyes on his figure until he disappeared around the corner, getting smaller and smaller until he was just gone.
Something about the whole thing felt wrong. James was always so calm, so put-together. What could have shaken him like this? Was it his grandmother’s illness? Or was it what she said about Jamie? Or maybe it was those two unexpected visitors.
Emmy rested a hand on her belly, her nerves tightening by the second.
When she got back to Moonlight Bay, someone rushed over to her.
“Emmy! You’re finally back!” Abriella’s face was lit up with excitement, waving a file folder in her hand. “You won’t believe what I found on my trip back home. It’s huge—”
“Hold on,” Emmy cut her off.
She steadied herself, hand on her back, and walked slowly into the study, her expression more serious than ever.
“We’ll talk about that in a minute. First, do you know anything about the Nelson family’s Brian and Martha?”
