Emmy closed her eyes and replayed all the information in her mind, making sure every detail was neatly sorted out. In just a few days, she’d be handing all this evidence to Ben herself. The military was probably about to make a big move. She needed to warn James, just to make sure he and the others were ready.
She grabbed her phone and opened her chat with James, typing a quick message.
Can you come home tonight?
She hit send, but the reply never came. The silence sat heavy, like her message had disappeared into thin air. James almost never ignored her unless he was out on a call or at the base, where his phone was locked down. Still, Emmy had a hunch about where he was right now. Most likely, he was still at the nursing home.
Her heart just sank. She tried not to let the worry show.
Abriella hung around until evening, then started to gather her things and get ready to leave. She barely made it to the door before Teresa walked in with Sylvia and Krystina right behind her.
“Look at this, everyone’s here!” Krystina’s voice boomed above the rest, her arms weighed down by two big bags stuffed with fresh veggies and meat. “Heard you all made it back. We have to celebrate tonight. Drinks are a must!”
Sylvia followed, smiling at Emmy. “Ms. Lincoln, I’ve got a report on Torch Machines’ latest numbers. Figured I’d give you the update in person.”
Teresa turned to Abriella with a gentle smile. “Abriella, why don’t you stay? We’re having a late dinner. You all work so hard, it’s rare to get everyone together like this.”
Abriella hesitated, then nodded. She stayed. Deep down, though, she was hoping for one thing.
Please, just don’t let Steve show up tonight. She really didn’t want to see him.
But life always seemed to have its own plans. Just as the thought crossed her mind, the housekeeper’s voice floated in from the entryway. “Mr. Michell, please come in.”
Steve strode in, carrying a bag of supplements for pregnant women. After handing them to the housekeeper, he scanned the room and spotted Abriella right away.
He walked over, his eyes full of that lazy, cocky charm he always wore. “So, how’d your investigation go?”
Abriella forced a smile that was all sarcasm. “Thanks to you, everything went perfectly.”
Steve laughed. “It’s a decades-old case. Digging up the past isn’t that simple.”
He stepped closer, his voice dropping, a hint of something deeper in his tone. “Claudia’s been on the military’s radar for years. They’ve probably already combed through everything she’s ever done.”
