The paper was thin, so light it should have been easy to tear, but it felt impossibly heavy in Ben’s hand. Every word on the page burned into his eyes, each letter searing his mind.
Claudia. Real name: Wild Girl.
Wild Girl? The name hit him like a punch to the gut. Crude, strange, and so far away from his present life. He’d nearly forgotten it, buried in the dustiest corners of his memory.
His fingers started to shake. He tried to steady his breath, but every inhale felt sharp and shallow. He kept reading, forcing himself to take in every line.
Each sentence cut deeper. Impersonation. Collusion with Cooper. Rape and murder. The words sliced through the years of carefully constructed lies. The truth, bloody and raw, spilled out after more than two decades of secrets.
It took him ten whole minutes to get through the stack of documents. By the end, the air in the room felt thin, like he’d been dropped underwater and couldn’t reach the surface. Anger surged up inside him, hot and uncontrollable, threatening to burn him alive.
Wild Girl… Wild Girl… He whispered the name, his voice rough, almost unrecognizable.
Was it really her? That Wild Girl?
Of course he remembered now. How could he forget? When he’d been kidnapped and dragged up into the mountains, he’d cried and begged to go home. The traffickers beat him until he was raw and bleeding. One time, one of them tossed him a stale bun, maybe out of pity. But before he could take a bite, a filthy little girl darted out of nowhere, grabbed it, and ate it in seconds. She was called Wild Girl.
Back then, he’d been in agony, starving, certain he would die in that place. But then another girl, the one called Claudia, ran in. She knelt beside him, gave him water, and gently broke her own bun into pieces, feeding him bit by bit.
All this time… All these years… He’d been wrong.
The woman by his side hadn’t just murdered the girl who saved him, she’d stolen her name. She’d lived under that stolen identity, enjoying his guilt and all the care he’d given for more than twenty years.
Ben gripped the table, gasping for air, his whole body trembling. He tried to stand, but the room spun so wildly he fell back into his chair.
Someone, get in here! he shouted, using every ounce of strength he had left.
