“Don’t worry,” he said as he gently took her hand. His voice was softer than before. “It’s safe here. My men are outside keeping watch.”
Only then did Emmy relax and nod.
After James left, Emmy went to the bathroom, then wandered around the courtyard for a bit.
Actually, “courtyard” was a bit of a stretch. It was more like a small patio, squeezed tight between three crowded rooms. Inside and out, several bodyguards stood tall and straight, steady as pine trees. Their presence made her feel oddly reassured.
She headed back to the bedroom, washed up, and got into bed.
Still, sleep didn’t come easy. She kept drifting in and out, half-awake, half-dreaming, with strange sounds echoing in her ears. Sometimes it was like a woman crying. Other times it sounded more like a wildcat wailing in the night.
When Lorraine finally woke her up, Emmy realized the sounds hadn’t just been a dream.
Lorraine looked worried as she spoke in a low voice. “Ma’am, after midnight, Martha and your two cousins tried to come see you, but the bodyguards wouldn’t let them in.
“Later, someone started playing creepy recordings outside, like ghosts wailing, trying to scare you.
“Luckily, you slept through most of it and didn’t really hear.”
Emmy could only stare in disbelief. She couldn’t believe anyone in the Nelson family would stoop to such childish pranks.
“Did the bodyguards catch anyone?”
Lorraine shook her head. “No, but they found a bunch of speakers hidden in the bushes. It was probably those young cousins of yours.”
Emmy didn’t say anything else and let Lorraine help her get ready.
But as the clock crept toward four, James still hadn’t shown up. The courtyard was a maze of twists and turns, and she didn’t dare try to find the main hall alone.
Just then, she heard the bodyguards in the courtyard greeting someone respectfully.
Emmy stepped outside and saw Cadence walk in, dressed in a sharp black suit. She looked as cool and composed as always.
“Mrs. Nelson,” Cadence said with a slight nod. “James is tied up right now. He asked me to come get you.”
