My dearest Emmy,
If you’re reading this letter, I’m already gone. Life comes and goes, just like the seasons. Death is just a part of it, so please, don’t let yourself drown in sadness for me. The only thing I can’t let go of is James.
The anger and pain he carries have trapped him for so long. I know you want to help him. But Emmy, once someone steps onto that road, there’s no turning back.
When Jamie died, it was like someone dropped a heavy stone into a deep pool. The waves from it spread farther and deeper than you can imagine. This isn’t just about revenge. It’s a messy, complicated web that’s caught up too many people, too many interests. If James tries to tear it apart, it’ll only lead to more hurt for the Nelson family, and in the end, he’ll be blamed for it all.
Holding onto hate is like staring into a dark whirlpool. It sucks you in until there’s nothing left. I don’t want James to throw away his whole life for someone who’s already gone. Even more, I don’t want revenge to blind him so much that he can’t see the people who love him, or the world around him.
Emmy, you are the only light in his life. Promise me, no matter what happens, you’ll pull him back from that path. Don’t let him destroy himself for revenge.
The letter was short, but every word felt heavy, weighing on Emmy’s chest until it was hard to breathe.
As soon as she finished reading, Cadence took the letter from her hand and walked outside to the fire pit near the gate. Without a second thought, she tossed it into the flames.
The fire flared up, swallowing the letter in seconds until there was nothing left but ashes.
Emmy clung to Lorraine’s hand, her knuckles white from the pressure.
“Let’s go home,” she whispered.
Lorraine looked at her, a little surprised. “Aren’t you going to wait for James?”
Emmy shook her head. “Not tonight.”
Back at Moonlight Bay, Emmy felt completely drained, body and soul. She hadn’t slept well the night before. After washing up, she collapsed into bed and fell asleep almost instantly.
She slept so deeply that when she woke, a high fever had taken hold and refused to let go.
Lorelei rushed over with her medical team. After checking her over and doing what they could, they said it was her bottled-up emotions that had made her sick.
Everyone thought Emmy was just heartbroken over Mrs. Nelson’s passing.
But Emmy knew the truth. It was the letter. The weight of those words had knocked her flat.
Now, she understood why her grandmother wanted so badly to stop James from seeking revenge. But she also knew better than anyone what that quest meant to him.
