Emmy stopped breathing for a moment.

Of course James knew. That day outside the memorial hall, his people were everywhere. There was no way to keep something like that from him.

She remembered Cadence’s warning and tried to play it safe. “Grandma just wanted me to be happy with you.”

James watched her, his dark eyes unreadable.

Emmy felt a flicker of guilt, but she forced herself to hold his gaze.

He didn’t ask any more questions. Instead, he just pulled her a little closer, his chin brushing gently over the top of her head.

“Then…” His voice was even rougher than before, and he paused like he was searching for the right words. “How about I move my household registration to yours? Would that be okay?”

She closed hers too, trying to sleep.

But not even three hours later, Emmy was awake again. Lately, she’d been getting up in the middle of the night more and more often. Every night, it felt like she made a dozen trips to the bathroom.

She tried not to wake him, but the second she started to move, James opened his eyes.

He threw off the covers, got up, and scooped her into his arms, carrying her to the bathroom like it was second nature.

After the second time, his voice was thick with worry.

“Babe, let’s not have any more kids after this.”

Emmy couldn’t help but smile. She turned her head and kissed his chin.
