A few days later, Sylvia called.
“Mr. Lincoln!” Her voice was bubbling with excitement. “The support documents for this quarter just came in. Our agricultural aid project made it into the top tier. The funds will be transferred tomorrow!”
Emmy was genuinely surprised. She knew Jared cared about this project, but she hadn’t expected him to go this far. Top-tier support was about as high as it got—almost national-level backing.
Something clicked in her mind and she asked, keeping her tone calm, “What about the AI prosthetics project?”
“That one got funding too!” Sylvia could barely contain herself. “It’s third-tier support. Not as much as the agricultural project, but honestly, it’s more than enough for where we are right now.”
Emmy nodded, feeling more at ease. “Ms. Moore, we need to be extra careful right now. You should review every single transaction yourself. No mistakes allowed.”
She paused, then added, “And watch every step as the project rolls out. What we’re making is meant for people who need it most. We can’t let anything go wrong along the way. Do you understand?”
“Absolutely! You can count on me, Mr. Lincoln!”
After hanging up, Emmy leaned back in her chair and tapped her fingers on the desk. The AI prosthetics proposal she’d given Dean had been a fake. The real plan, she’d handed over to Jared as a gesture of trust once their partnership deepened.
She’d picked her side. Of course she’d look out for herself and her future. She’d set Dean up, but so what? In her previous life, he’d spent seven years quietly making her life miserable. This little bit of payback didn’t even scratch the surface of what she’d endured.
She picked up her tablet and started scrolling through news from the cabinet office. There was nothing negative at all about the minister Dean was supporting. Emmy frowned. Clearly, Dean had sensed something and cleaned up the mess before it could get out.
She couldn’t help but think back to the memorial service, to the way Dean had looked at her. Cold, searching, complicated. If he ever figured out her schemes or uncovered that James was really Mr. Nelson, what would be going on in his mind behind that poker face? Emmy had always felt there was something off about him.
