The commanding officer watched James’s tall, solitary figure, a storm of emotions swirling inside him. He’d seen James on the battlefield—ruthless, decisive. He’d seen him at victory parties, bright with confidence, owning the room. But he’d never seen him like this. Not broken. Not desperate.
When James finally slipped out the doors of the command center, it was like someone had torn a hole in the heavy, suffocating air. Will was the first to snap out of it. He let out a low, urgent shout.
“Let’s move!”
The men in their combat uniforms followed without hesitation. They caught up to James outside. The night wind stung their faces, sharp and cold. James was already pulling open the door of a black SUV, his movements stiff and determined. At a silent cue from the others, Will rushed forward, planting himself by the car.
His voice was low, steady, and left no room for argument.
“James, we’re with you. All the way.”
He looked James right in the eyes.
“If we have to search the whole Pacific, we’ll bring your wife home.”
Behind him, the Dragonscale team lined up, silent but fierce. Their eyes burned with the same promise. They didn’t need to say a word.
James paused, hand on the door. He didn’t turn around. He just stared at their reflections in the car window, his jaw tight. After a moment, without speaking, he slid into the driver’s seat and shut the door with a sharp click.
The engine roared to life. The SUV shot off, heading straight toward the heart of the city’s secure zone.
An hour later, James strode through the halls of the National Counter-Terrorism Special Operations Command. He didn’t bother with announcements or protocol. He made straight for the innermost office and knocked.
“Come in.”
The voice inside was calm, steady. James opened the door. The lingering scent of gunpowder and blood followed him in, filling the room in an instant.
Behind the desk sat a middle-aged man, his uniform heavy with medals and stars, his face stern but not surprised. Kingston. The top commander of the most elite unit in the States.
James stood rigidly at attention, but his voice came out rough, almost raw.
