Dean kept his eyes on her, noticing every little thing she did. The moment he saw her hand resting on her stomach, he reached over and gently took it in his, wrapping her fingers in his palm. His voice came out low and rough, heavy with regret.
“I’m sorry, babe. I really am. I never meant to hurt you, I just… I didn’t want a kid, and I didn’t realize how much that would hurt you. I was wrong.”
He squeezed her hand a little tighter, searching her face. “If having a child is what you truly want, then once you’re healthy again, I’ll be right there with you. We’ll try, together. We’ll have our own family.”
He hesitated, then continued. “And about that photo… that was a misunderstanding. It was Evelina’s memorial day. I spent the whole day in meetings, my wallet and phone were with my assistant. He must have put it in there by accident.”
“I was mad, but only because you went through my bag. I thought you didn’t trust me.” He paused, his tone softening. “But now I get it. You’re my wife. You should be able to look at my stuff whenever you want. My phone, too. Here.”
He pulled his phone from his pocket and held it out to her. Dean knew Emmy well. No matter how close they got, she always respected his privacy. She wouldn’t take the phone, and she didn’t. She just glanced at it, cold and uninterested, before locking eyes with him.
Something about his explanation didn’t sit right with her. “I’m asking how I ended up here,” she said, voice cool.
Dean realized she wasn’t budging. He moved on to his backup story. “You passed out from blood loss. While I stayed by your side, I realized just how badly I’d messed up.”
“So, I quit as CEO at Sparrow Group. I brought you here so we could start over.” His gaze grew gentle, almost pleading. “This is the place you always wanted to visit, right? Blue ocean, pink sand… and if we’re lucky, maybe we’ll even spot pink dolphins.”
“You’ve been in a coma for a month. From now on, I’m not leaving. I’ll help you get better, I promise.”
Emmy listened, barely believing a word. No one knew Dean’s ambition like she did. The idea of him giving up his CEO title for her seemed impossible. She studied his face, searching for any sign of a lie, but he looked heartbreakingly sincere.
