Emmy paused at the bedroom door, turning to face him and blocking his way. “Give me my phone. I want to sleep by myself.”
The light in Dean’s eyes faded in an instant. He looked at her, almost begging. “I won’t do anything, I promise. I just want to hold you while we sleep.”
Her brow furrowed, but Emmy didn’t budge. She wasn’t ready to let him off that easily. The hurt was still there. Just because he was trying to fix things now didn’t mean she could pretend nothing ever happened.
“My phone,” she said again, her voice flat.
Dean’s lips pressed together and something stubborn flickered in his eyes. “If you sleep with me, I’ll give it to you.”
She stared at him for a long moment, then shut the door in his face. The lock clicked behind her. Whatever, she thought. She could live without her phone.
Honestly, she was exhausted. Maybe it was from being out for so long, but her body felt heavy, almost foreign, like she was moving through fog. She washed up quickly and collapsed onto the bed, falling asleep almost instantly.
Over the next week, Emmy settled into a strange, steady routine. She’d sunbathe and nap during the day, eat dinner, then sleep some more at night. A doctor visited every day, giving her massages and checking on her recovery. Her body was getting stronger, she could see the difference, but her heart just felt heavier.
It was impossible not to notice. Dean was doing everything he could to keep her cut off from the outside world. Any time she tried to use a phone by herself or check her messages, he’d come up with some excuse to stop her. It was like he didn’t want her talking to anyone, not even for a second.
After a while, Emmy started wondering if Dean had gotten himself into some huge mess back home. Maybe he was even running from the law, and that’s why he brought her to this remote island. Once that idea settled in her head, she stopped asking for the phone altogether.
One morning, Dean left the house early. After he was gone, the maid—a woman with warm, dark skin—approached Emmy, speaking in a language she didn’t understand. The maid pulled out her phone and opened a translation app. A robotic female voice read out in English, “Sir has gone to the company to handle some matters. I will stay and take care of Madam.”
