Back in her bedroom, Emmy closed the door behind her and locked it with a soft click. She just stood there for a moment, caught off guard by her own reflexes. It was automatic now. Before, even when she and Dean had the worst fights, she’d never locked the bedroom door. But lately, ever since she woke up, locking the door had become second nature.
She guessed it had something to do with everything Dean had done to keep her from getting pregnant all those years. No matter how nice he acted now, no matter how thoughtful, she just couldn’t get back to the way things were between them. That kind of closeness felt impossible.
Emmy walked over to the bed, lay down, and pulled her phone out from under the pillow. She opened up her VPN, getting ready to sign in to her messenger app. A new login meant she’d need a verification code. She tapped “Get code” without thinking, then waited. A minute passed. Nothing. Her phone stayed silent.
That’s when it hit her. She was using a new SIM card, not the number tied to her messenger account. There was no way she’d get the code. With a frustrated sigh, Emmy ran her fingers through her hair and frowned at the ceiling. “Why do I keep making these dumb mistakes?” she muttered. “It’s like my brain’s missing a piece lately…”
Like earlier that day, when she’d gone to the corner shop to buy a phone, even though she didn’t have a cent. Or now, waiting for a text she knew would never come, just because she forgot about the new SIM. Something was off with her. Before, even on her worst days, she never made mistakes like this. Now, her mind felt sluggish, like it was stuck in molasses.
She took a deep breath, trying to shake off the weird feeling in her chest. Logging into social media could wait. Instead, she opened her browser and started scrolling through the latest international news.
…
Elsewhere, on the other side of the world, the sun was just starting to rise over Moonlight Bay in the Capital. Teresa stared at Emmy’s phone, her eyes red and raw from crying and sleepless nights. Her daughter had been missing for a month and a half. Every morning, the first thing she did was check the phone, praying for even the smallest sign.
Just as she was about to give up and set the phone aside, a message alert chimed in the quiet morning. Teresa’s heart skipped a beat. She opened the text right away. On the screen was a messenger login verification code.
Messenger Security Center: You are trying to log in to your account. Your code is…
It was Emmy. Her daughter was out there, trying to log in.
Teresa clung to this tiny hope like it was the only thing keeping her afloat. She called Will immediately, telling him everything. Will didn’t waste a second, telling his tech team to track the login.
“Find it! Track down the IP address for that account, now. Hurry!”
About an hour later, they got a result.
