Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 880

Dean froze.

He drew in a shaky breath, forcing the word out through clenched teeth.

"Impossible."

A faint, bitter smile tugged at Emmy's lips, so fragile it almost disappeared.

"Dean, do you know something?"

"Living like this... it's worse than dying."

She didn't look at him again. She simply turned and walked into the cabin.

Dean stood alone on the deck, the old fear sweeping over him, heavy and cold. He grabbed his phone and called his psychiatrist.

He hurried through an explanation of Emmy's condition.

The doctor's voice was steady, but the weight in it was impossible to miss.

"Sir, from what you've described, your wife's depression has reached a very dangerous stage. Her passivity and numbness are known as emotional dissociation. It's a classic sign of severe depression. She's losing the will to live and nothing around her interests her anymore."

"She's at extreme risk right now. Even the smallest trigger could push her over the edge. She needs immediate medical treatment."

The call ended.

Dean slumped onto the deck, feeling like all the strength had left his body. He stared out at nothing, numb and empty.

Why did it have to be this way?

Why?

He'd given up everything for her. He'd gone to war with the whole world, burned every bridge, lost his future, lost his pride. All he wanted was to keep her close.

So why did the rose he cared for with everything he had only want to wither away?

There was nothing left for him now. Except for her, he had nothing. There was no path left to turn back to.

For the next few days, Dean barely left Emmy's side.

He stopped trying to make her do anything. He just stayed near, reading to her, sitting with her through movies she couldn't focus on, just being there.

But the harder he tried, the more trapped Emmy felt.

His love pressed in on her from every angle, thick and suffocating. It filled the room, the air, seeping into every part of her life until she could barely breathe.

Her body finally reached its breaking point.

Sometimes, when she saw him coming toward her down the hall, her chest would tighten and it felt almost impossible to breathe.

New Year's came.

The whole world was celebrating, but the island was silent and unnatural.

Dean had been gone on business for a few days. When he called, he looked exhausted but there was a spark in his eyes.

"Baby, let's go out for New Year's. I want to show you the fireworks, let you see the crowds. Maybe the energy will help lift your mood."

But all Emmy felt was dread.
