Valerie's POV
His hand was still hovering in the air between us. The promise of total, absolute revenge was right there for the taking.
I looked from his hand back to his face. His dark eyes were burning with an intensity that was all for me. He was waiting for my answer.
I took a slow, deliberate step back. The movement was small, but it broke the powerful current that had been flowing between us.
His hand fell to his side. A flicker of confusion crossed his face.
I turned away from him and looked out at the peaceful, star-filled sky. The fireworks were gone. The anger was gone.
There was only the cold, quiet calm of the mountain peak.
When I finally spoke, my voice was perfectly level. It cut through the violent tension of the last few minutes like a shard of ice.
"No," I said.
The word just hung there in the cool night air. I heard him take in a sharp breath. He was completely shocked.
He took a step toward me. "No? Valerie, after everything they did to you? After everything you just told me? You don't want justice?"
"I do want justice," I said, still not looking at him. "But I will get it myself."
I finally turned back to face him. His expression was a mask of disbelief. He genuinely couldn't understand.
"Think about what you're offering me, Kai," I said, my voice calm and rational. "You're offering to be my sword. To fight my battles for me. To solve my problems."
"Yes," he said, his voice a low growl. "That is what a mate does. He protects what is his."
