Kai's POV
My laughter finally faded, leaving a strange, invigorating calm in its place. I took a deep breath of the cold mountain air.
She was right. And I had been wrong.
I walked back inside, through the library where the ancient books still sat on the table. She was gone. My driver had already taken her back to the Silver Crown compound.
The empty restaurant felt different now. It wasn't just a display of power anymore. It felt like the stage where something important had just happened.
I went back to the balcony and stood where she had stood. I thought about her words.
"I take out my own trash."
She wasn't just refusing my help. She was declaring her own power.
The romantic tension was still there, a low hum under my skin. But now, it was mixed with something else. Something solid and real.
Respect.
I no longer saw her as a prize to be won, or a woman to be protected. I saw her as an equal. A fellow predator.
The drive back to my own territory was quiet. I didn't listen to music. I just thought.
I had been approaching this all wrong. My plan to offer her revenge was a traditional Alpha move. It was what my father would have done.
But Valerie wasn't a traditional Luna. She didn't want a protector in the old sense.
She wanted an ally.
I realized I couldn't just claim her. I couldn't just protect her. I had to earn my place at her side.
The pursuit just became a hundred times more difficult. And a thousand times more interesting.
