Mrs. Miller gritted her teeth, slipped off a ring from her finger, and tossed it to Quintessa. The ring was set with a citrine of moderate quality, nothing too fancy, but it was enough to cover the debts.
Mrs. Smith, visibly infuriated, also removed a ring and threw it Quintessa's way. Molly immediately scooped it up with delight.
The reason they weren't whipping out their credit cards was simple: they were all ladies of wealth, and the shame of being seen paying off gambling debts with plastic would be too much to bear.
Once the debts were settled, Quintessa called out, "Come on, let's keep going!"
Mrs. Harrington, nursing her sore wrist, suggested, "We've lost all our money, and it's getting late. Maybe it's time to call it a night."
Quintessa lifted her chin defiantly, "Call it a night? Why on earth should we do that? We agreed to make a night of it. Look outside, it's still dark. At your ages, surely you're not rushing home for some thrilling 'action' between the sheets? If you're not getting any excitement there, why not find it here with the cards? It's better than lying in bed, making small talk with your husbands under a quilt."
Quintessa's blunt words flushed the other ladies' faces with embarrassment. "You... you..."
Quintessa spread her hands, "Am I wrong? Even if you're yearning for it, can your husbands still satisfy you? If not, why not find something meaningful to fill the void? Card games seem like a good option to me."
This version of Quintessa, so different from the timid woman who had first entered the room, resembled a rebellious ruffian, lacking only a cigarette hanging from her lips.
