Zion hurriedly asked Sylvia to keep Chris busy while he rushed out to buy some fresh salmon for dinner.

Luckily, Sylvia had been planning to visit Reese anyway, so she agreed.

Some conversations, after all, needed to be had face-to-face.

When Sylvia reached the hospital room, both the Garcias and the Sanfords had already left. Only Chris and Lester remained, quietly discussing Reese’s condition.

As soon as Chris spotted her, he abruptly clammed up.

Sylvia found this odd and was about to ask what was going on when Lester quickly changed the subject.

“Zion’s not with you?”

“He…” Sylvia tiptoed closer, whispering something into Lester’s ear.

Lester looked awkward, sneaking a quick glance at Chris.

Chris immediately sensed something was up. “Hey, what are you two whispering about?”

“Nothing!” Sylvia replied quickly and tucked herself behind Lester, which to the casual observer looked like a gesture of trust—or even something a bit more intimate between a couple.

Both Chris and Lester were momentarily taken aback.

Right then, Rupert stepped out of the hospital room, his dark eyes landing on Sylvia’s hand still holding Lester’s arm.

Sylvia noticed, lifted her chin just a bit, and met Rupert’s gaze—steady and cool. Then, just as quickly, she looked away, her expression turning distant.

Rupert held her gaze for a second longer, then his eyes darkened as he gave a short, self-deprecating laugh. “I’m outta here.”

He turned his back to Sylvia and walked away.

“I’ll go check on him,” Chris said, and hurried after Rupert.

Once they were gone, Lester finally turned to Sylvia. “All good now. Go on in. If you need anything, just call.”

“Thanks,” she nodded and pushed open the door.

Inside, the sharp scent of antiseptic hung in the air. Reese was propped up on a pillow, her face pale as parchment, staring listlessly at the window.

Hearing the door, Reese turned and her eyes instantly filled with tears.
