Encore of the Avenging Muse (Sylvia and Rupert) novel Chapter 620

Chris walked over, glancing at everyone in the room.

“Ms. Sanford is going to be fine,” he announced.

Once he’d finished relaying the doctor’s instructions, he picked up right where he’d left off.

“Last night, it wasn’t just Sylvia at Mr. Rupert’s house. I was there too. Mr. Rupert threw his back out, and I asked Sylvia to stay and help. I only left this morning.”

He paused, his tone heavy with implication. “As for Mr. Rupert’s back pain, I think certain people here know the real reason.”

Chris didn’t say it outright, but he shot a pointed look at Kay.

Kay pretended not to notice, forcing a smile, but a vein was visibly twitching at her temple.

Chris didn’t give her any time to recover. His voice was cold. “Also, I just checked with Mr. Rupert. All of Ms. Sanford’s medication is missing from her purse.”

Lester’s face darkened. “That’s impossible. Reese has been on those meds for a while—she’d never forget to bring them.”

“What you do next is up to you,” Chris said, almost too casually. “But if it were me, I’d probably call the police.”

The words had barely left his mouth before Kay’s expression changed completely.

“We can’t call the police.”

“Oh? And why not?” Chris shot back.

Kay hesitated, then pointed accusingly at Sylvia. “Do you really want everyone to know that Reese landed in the ER because this woman was at Mr. Rupert’s house? There’s a lot riding on the engagement between our families. If this gets out, it’s going to be messy for everyone.”

She had a point.

But Sylvia caught the flicker of calculation in Kay’s eyes.

From the very start, Kay had known exactly what happened in Soho Bay. She hadn’t been surprised about Reese’s collapse—she’d just been eager to pin the blame on Sylvia.

There was no way, Sylvia thought, that Kay wasn’t involved.

Tristan spoke up as well, “She’s right. Calling the police would ruin Reese. She can’t handle that kind of public scrutiny right now.”

Even Lester couldn’t argue with that.

As the tension settled in, Chris suddenly rushed over to Sylvia and grabbed her hand.

“Why didn’t you say anything? You’re bleeding everywhere!”
