Encore of the Avenging Muse (Sylvia and Rupert) novel Chapter 625

On the drive, Lester noticed Sylvia flipping through an admissions packet, her eyes lingering on the name of the school.

It was the one he’d been hoping she’d attend.

“Sylvia, you don’t have to—”

She cut him off right away. “Don’t overthink it. Sure, the school Mr. Rupert recommended is top-tier, but that program? It’s not for regular people. The tuition is insane, and even the scholarships are basically pre-arranged for the rich kids.”

She couldn’t deny the school’s prestige, or its reputation for producing legendary designers.

But Sylvia had checked the alumni lists from previous years, and without fail, every student in that program came with a “son of” or “daughter of” attached to their name.

The scholarships looked generous on paper, but in reality, they were just there to pad the résumés of these trust fund kids. The money wouldn’t even buy them a decent designer handbag.

Sylvia knew she wasn’t in the same league as them. She just wanted to live within her means.

Lester wanted to tell her he could cover her tuition, but knowing her, he bit his tongue.

He managed a light smile. “Sylvia, at least humor me. Just say you’re doing it for me.”

Sylvia cleared her throat, playing along. “For you.”

Lester’s joking gaze suddenly turned intense and warm. He gently brushed a strand of hair from her cheek, then cupped her face and leaned in.

Sylvia didn’t pull away. She knew it was time to take a step forward herself.

Just as Lester’s lips were almost on hers, the car jerked with a sudden stop, making her lurch forward.

“Are you okay?” Lester asked immediately.

She shook her head, meaning she was fine.

Lester looked up at Zion, who was driving. “What happened?”

Zion shot him an exasperated look and nodded toward the other car. “That guy cut me off.”

Sylvia glanced out the window.

A familiar car had pulled up beside them.

The window was half-rolled down, and a hand holding a cigarette rested on the edge, a ruby ring on the thumb glinting dangerously in the fading smoke.

Rupert.

Hadn’t he already left? What was he trying to pull?

Sylvia fumed. “Zion, just drive.”
