Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 428

In short, they refused to spend a dime.

"I've already spoken with them," the lawyer said wearily, "but…"

"But what?" Nita didn't understand. Jared had trusted his parents completely, transferring all his assets to them.

"His parents are unwilling to hire a lawyer," the lawyer explained. "And the second time I went to see them, they had already left on a trip with their younger son and his wife."

"What?" It took Nita a moment to process this, and then she burst out laughing. "That's fantastic! He finally got what he deserved! Serves him right!"

"Ms. Nita?" Now it was the lawyer's turn to be confused.

Nita couldn't stop smiling. "His parents won't help him, so why should I, his ex-wife, do anything? You've got the wrong person, sir. I have absolutely no connection to Mr. Jared Page anymore."

"Ms. Nita, wait, please…" the lawyer pleaded, afraid she would hang up. "Mr. Jared said to ask you to consider the years you spent as husband and wife. If not for that, then for your son's sake. You wouldn't want him to have a father in prison, would you? It could affect his future employment. And even if he doesn't pursue a public service career, imagine the ridicule he'd face from friends and classmates. How could he hold his head up? It would even affect his prospects in finding a partner."

"I see," Nita said, her voice still flat. "That's fine. I'll just tell our son his father is dead."

The lawyer was speechless.

"Sir, I'm busy," Nita said, her voice turning to ice. "I hope this is the last time you disturb me. I have nothing to do with Mr. Whitman. To be blunt, forget prison—I wish he would just drop dead. So, do you really think I'm going to hire a lawyer to save him?" The memory of Jared's coldness, of the despair she felt when her mother died, chilled her to the bone.

"I… I see. I apologize for bothering you," the lawyer said, his voice laced with defeat.
