Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 430

Emma's life settled into a simple, structured, and fulfilling rhythm: classes, rehabilitation, and weekends at her aunt's house with her grandmother.

Time flew by, and before she knew it, winter had arrived.

In mid-December, the university let out for Christmas break.

With a two-week holiday ahead, most students left campus, but Emma stayed behind to continue her daily rehabilitation treatments.

On the first day of the break, she made herself a simple, healthy breakfast and then bundled up in a thick down coat for the walk to the wellness center.

As soon as she walked in, a deep male voice called out to her. "There's the little dancer!"

It was one of the regulars, a man in his fifties named Robert.

The doctors had told her he suffered from a rare, incurable disease. To put it bluntly, he was living on borrowed time.

He didn't come to the center seeking a cure but rather to find some relief from his pain.

Dr. Crimson had said that painkillers would work just as well, but for Robert, finding a wellness center run by people from his homeland seemed to be a way of soothing his homesickness.

Robert always called her "the little dancer." He was a warm, familiar presence, often bringing small gifts for the staff—a single flower or a box of cookies. He always made sure Emma got one, too.

After all, over the past few months, the two of them were the only ones who showed up at the center every single day.

"We're the spiritual shareholders of this place," Mr. Robert would joke.

Today, Emma had brought gifts for everyone: an apple pie she had baked the night before, using a recipe she'd learned from Sebastian.

Robert, who had a sweet tooth, happily ate two large slices.
