Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 450

“What do you mean, gone? Did he disappear on his own, or did something happen to him?”

“He disappeared,” Hanley choked out. “I texted him today, and he’s blocked me. I tried calling, but he changed his number. I can’t reach him.”

Cathie found that strange. “Did he emigrate?”

Hanley shook his head. “I don’t know. But wherever he went, he has nothing. How is he going to survive?”

“Didn’t you say he went to stay with his father? Maybe his dad left him something. Why else would he give up his share of the company money?”

That only made Hanley feel worse. “He donated all the money his dad left him. Every last cent. He didn’t take any money from the company sale, and he gave everything he’d earned before to Emma when they divorced. He has nothing now. I’m honestly scared he might do something drastic. The last time we spoke, it sounded like he was saying goodbye.”

“What did he say?”

Hanley wiped his eyes. “He said, ‘Hanley, live a good life from now on. Talk things over with Cathie before you do anything; she’s more rational than you are. Selling tea is a good life. Don’t take risks, don’t make any foolish investments. Just protect what you have, raise your kids well, and that will be enough.’”
