Because of Bart, the usual tension between them was absent. For once, she wasn't like a porcupine with all its quills raised. They could actually speak civilly.
"What made you think of doing this?" Theodore asked as they walked out of the guest hall.
Emma couldn't very well say it was because Sebastian had thrown a fit. She gave a vague answer. "I found it while I was unpacking. I've been living abroad for years and don't know where I'll end up. I realized that even though it's just a stone, it might mean a lot to some people, like Bart's parents. So, I thought it was best to find a proper place for it."
Theodore nodded. "That's good. I hope in his next life, he…"
Hearing only half the sentence, Emma instinctively asked, "What about his next life?"
"If there is a next life…" he took a deep breath, "I hope I can help him achieve all his dreams."
Emma was curious. "What were his dreams? Besides exploring the world?"
He gave her a long, meaningful look and then smiled. "You shouldn't ask about a boy's dreams."
"What, is that a gender secret now? How boring," she huffed.
They chatted as they walked to the main gate, where they met up with Anna, who was still waiting on the stone bench.
"I'm heading back. What about you two?" she asked. With her three bodyguards, there was no room for two more people in her car.
"We drove ourselves," Theodore said. "We're going to explore the area for a bit, so we're not going back just yet."
"That makes sense," Emma nodded. "Anna's come all this way. You should show her around."
She had fulfilled his wish, in a way. Sebastian had given up a lot for her, and a loving partner was the rarest thing in the world.
"When are you coming to Cresthaven?" she asked. Her visa appointment was coming up soon, and it would be best if he could schedule his around the same time. Once they had their visas, they had to start thinking about returning to the UK. The Edinburgh Festival was in August, and they needed to get back for rehearsals.
"In a couple of days. I've already scheduled my appointment; it's around the same time as yours. I just got back, and my dad has been dragging me around to meet this person and that person. My relatives are all clamoring to see me, too. I'll just stay a couple more days, even though my heart is already in Cresthaven."
"Then you should spend more time with your family. There's no rush."
They talked for about half an hour. Sebastian was a chatterbox and could jump from one topic to another seamlessly. If she hadn't been in the car, they probably would have talked for an hour. Even so, he was reluctant to hang up.
A person's love and attachment were impossible to hide. Look at Theodore, for instance. In the twelve years she had known him, their phone calls had never lasted more than two minutes.
