“Oh, Theodore’s back!” Fanny exclaimed, her face lighting up. “That boy, didn’t he say he wasn’t coming today?”

Emma’s ears perked up at Fanny’s choice of words: *back*. Fanny had said “come back” as if this were his home.

“Good thing I made enough food!” Carney said from the kitchen. With Emma and Renee as guests, he had been planning a feast anyway.

Emma, however, was already rolling her eyes. It seemed she couldn’t escape this man.

Fanny went out to greet him, her cheerful voice carrying from the living room. “Oh, it’s wonderful that you’re back! Your classmates are here, too. You can all have dinner together.”

“Classmates? Which ones?” Theodore asked.

“Your two female classmates.”

His voice grew closer. “Emma? Renee? It’s you two?”

Renee’s eyes rolled so far back she might have seen her own brain. “Don’t say it’s a pleasure to see me, because it’s not.”

Theodore just chuckled and said to Fanny, “We used to bicker like this all through school. Some things never change.”

“Yes, yes, I understand,” Fanny said quickly. “Carney and I are the same way. The day isn’t complete without a little argument.”

*Dad Carney? Mom Fanny?* The names echoed in Emma’s head.

Hearing Fanny’s warm words, Renee felt a little embarrassed and held her tongue. She was here to visit the Pearsons, not to start a fight. She had to maintain some semblance of decorum in front of them.

“You guys go sit down,” Theodore offered. “I can help in here.”

Renee froze.

So did Emma.

Then Anna held up her phone, displaying a real-time translation app.

“I’m sorry, I wasn’t trying to… I was just afraid I wouldn’t understand you,” Anna explained, blushing with embarrassment at having inadvertently eavesdropped.

Just then, Theodore emerged from the kitchen with a plate of appetizers. Seeing the three of them chatting, he asked casually, “What are you all talking about? You seem to be getting along so well.”

Renee shot him a glare. “Oh, I was just telling Anna that she wasn’t the girlfriend you brought back last time…”
