Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 502

The bodyguard, just getting into the driver's seat, was startled by the sight. "Sir, do you need to go to the hospital?"

Leaning back against the seat, Theodore struggled to quell the churning in his gut. He nodded weakly. "Yes, please. Take me to the hospital."

Then he added, "Don't tell her. I don't want her to worry."

The car sped away.

Just after it disappeared down the street, the curtains in the window of the house next to Emma's were drawn closed.

Sebastian stepped away from the window and sank onto the sofa, looking utterly dejected.

Genevieve couldn't stand it anymore. "What is wrong with you, Seb? You refuse to spend time with Emma, you won't pick her up, you stop taking care of her, and now you're just standing here spying on her like some creep. What is your deal?"

Sebastian scoffed. "She doesn't lack for people to pick her up, drive her around, or take care of her. Look, I'm gone for a few days, and she's already cozying up with her ex-husband again."

"That's a horrible thing to say," Genevieve retorted, her tone sharp. "How can you talk about Emma like that? ‘Cozying up with her ex-husband?' Maybe he was just giving her a ride home. It's dark out, and it's not as safe here as it is back home. You won't pick her up, so you can't get mad when someone else does."

"She has bodyguards! Why would she need her ex-husband to drive her anywhere?" Sebastian snapped, his irritation growing. "Did you see him? He just touched her face!"

"So what? Maybe she had something on her face. Why don't you trust her? If you don't trust someone, why are you even dating them?"

"Trust her? Look! I don't go with her, and she brings a bodyguard into her house for the night. A male bodyguard. What, are they having a sleepover?" Sebastian's frustration boiled over.

Genevieve exploded. "Are you crazy, Seb? I can almost tolerate you being suspicious of her ex—they were married, that's a fact. But suspecting her bodyguard too? Don't you think that's going way too far?"

Sebastian stammered, "I'm not… I'm not suspicious of her and the bodyguard. It's about appearances. She shouldn't be letting a single man stay overnight in her house. Even if I trust her, other people will get the wrong idea."

"Oh, for God's sake! Who cares what ‘other people' think? The only person getting the wrong idea is you! Do I misunderstand? Did her ex-husband misunderstand?" Genevieve had had enough. She shot him a warning glare. "I'm telling you, if you keep this up, you're going to lose her."

Emma was, indeed, deeply shaken.

She was plagued by nightmares all night, waking up screaming several times. Each time, Allen's calm voice would come from outside her door. "I'm here, Miss Bennett. You're safe."

Allen had already reported the night's events to his boss, who had issued new instructions. From now on, they were to follow a stricter protocol, and several more guards would be accompanying them to Edinburgh tomorrow.

After a restless night, Emma woke early. Her bags were already packed. Allen carried her suitcase to the waiting car.

As she got in, she glanced at the house next door.

There was no sign of movement. She wondered if he had already left for the airport.

She got in the car, and Allen drove them straight there.
