Seeing her holding a mop, Brandon was now absolutely certain. Lillian’s new job was as a cleaner.

Bella whispered, “She’s really a cleaner?”

Brandon’s anger flared.

Lillian had renounced all her family and company shares, refused all the money, only to turn around and apply for a cleaning job at someone else's company.

Was she determined to drag the Mercer family’s name through the mud?

He stormed over to her and snapped, “Lillian, if you have no shame, could you at least spare the Mercer family some face? You’re working as a cleaner, a demeaning job like this. Do you want everyone to whisper behind our backs about how cruel and heartless the Mercer family is?”

Lillian was stunned by his words and hadn't even had a chance to respond when Nathan's voice boomed from his office doorway.

Nathan called out, “What demeaning job? We’re talking about ‘Li,’ a legend in the industry, admired by countless people. What’s demeaning about her coming back to work?”

Brandon snatched the mop from Lillian’s hand, hissing in a low voice, “How long are you going to keep up this childish rebellion? Do you have any regard for the reputation of the Mercer and Blake families? If you need money, just tell me! I’ll give it to you!”

Lillian snatched the mop back. “I don’t need your money. Please leave and stop bossing me around at my workplace. I will manage my own life.”

Brandon shot back, “This is how you manage your life? By dragging the names of the Mercer and Blake families through the dirt?”

“When you threw me in prison, didn’t you already decide I was a disgrace? Now I’m just trying to work, and suddenly I’m embarrassing you again?”

Brandon retorted, “You’re not just embarrassing us! Why work as a cleaner? Even people from ordinary families look down on cleaning jobs. You’re a high-society lady. If you need money, ask us! Who would say no? Why must you insist on doing such a lowly job?”

He didn't notice that Nathan was now walking towards them.

Lillian did. She saw the serious expression on Nathan’s face and knew he was about to step in and defend her.

Lillian gave him a subtle hand signal to stop, and Nathan paused.

She stepped closer to Brandon. “In your eyes, the only way for me to get money is to beg you for it, is that right?

“When you’re happy, you’ll give me a little more. When you’re not, you’ll just toss me some scraps.

“In your eyes, me getting a job is shameful.

“And if I work as a cleaner, it’s demeaning and even more shameful, right?

“Brandon, just how worthless do you think I am?”

Brandon argued, “You’re a debutante from a prestigious family. The Mercers have a reputation to uphold. And the Blake family is more powerful than ever. Have you ever thought about how people will see our two families when word gets out that you’re working as a cleaner here?”

Lillian replied coldly, “How will they see you? Do I need to issue a public statement disowning my relationship with you all?”

Furious, Brandon raised his hand to slap her.

But Lillian caught his wrist. “You already have a more agreeable sister now, don’t you?

“Bella is capable and respectable. She can even get you into this company. She makes you look good, doesn’t she?

“You should save your lectures for someone else. You’d be better off spending your time sucking up to your new sister.

“After all, the Mercer family will be depending on her from now on, right, Brandon?”

Lillian’s words were the final blow, utterly humiliating him.
