Lillian felt like today was just the absolute worst.
She had been bombarded by this whole group of people, one after another.
If she had committed a crime, she wished the law would just punish her instead of making her endure this misery.
Her illness left her weak, her body feeling weightless. A simple tug from anyone was enough to make her stumble, impossible to resist.
And just like that, Sebastian dragged her away.
Lillian was utterly exasperated. “Sebastian, are you also here to condemn me for taking a demeaning and shameful job as a cleaner?”
Sebastian looked surprised. “What are you talking about? You got a job? As a cleaner? Lillian, did prison mess with your head?
You’re a Mercer heiress, you’re Noah’s mother. You have enough money to last a lifetime. Why would you go out and get a job?”
Lillian knew it. She knew Sebastian wouldn't spare her either. This kind of criticism came all too easily to him.
Fine, if they were going to treat her like a lost cause, she might as well act the part. “Yes, prison did mess with my head. And isn't that all thanks to you people?”
Since her release, not a single person had apologized to her for what happened with Noah. Not one person had spoken to her with a kind word.
Instead, they all stood on their moral high ground, criticizing and making demands of her.
She had a prison record. She was tainted.
So, everyone seemed to think her life was over, that the only path left for her was to obediently follow their arrangements.
Have another child to save Noah, and then hand over her brilliant, elite husband to the equally brilliant and elite Bella.
Was she supposed to wait for them to throw her scraps, to grovel and thank them for the mercy of letting her live?
Sebastian suddenly froze. It was as if he had just remembered that Lillian had gone to prison to take the fall for someone else.
For a moment, guilt made him soften his stance.
But his anger still burned.
“Lillian, you were so capable when you helped me build my company. How could you lower yourself to work as a cleaner?”
She stared directly into his eyes. “What’s wrong with being a cleaner? In the early days of your startup, wasn't I the one who cleaned the office? Sebastian, are you ashamed of me, or are you ashamed of the work I'm doing?”
Sebastian stammered, “You...” He quickly changed the subject. “And seducing other men? Do you have any respect for me at all?”
Lillian understood. He must have overheard everything when he walked in.
She had no idea where the rumor about her seducing Nathan had come from.
She understood even less how gossip could travel so quickly to the Mercer family.
