“We’ve noticed there was a man named Eugene at your company. You fired him some time ago—can you tell us exactly why?” the detective asked.
“Does this have anything to do with the case?” Tyler replied, his voice strained.
“We have to question anyone who seems suspicious,” the officer said, her tone leaving no room for argument.
Tyler’s eyes lost focus; his mind was in chaos. “Nepotism. Corruption.” The words slipped out flatly.
…
Even after Tyler left the interview room, everything still felt surreal. He leaned against the corridor wall just outside, the hum of the police station at night filling his ears, but all he could hear in his mind was the female detective’s questioning:
“Your wife called your phone repeatedly that day. Why didn’t you answer?”
He stared up at the stark white ceiling, his chest tightening as if a giant fist had ripped his heart in two—the pain was excruciating.
“Mr. Erickson? Mr. Erickson, are you alright?” Secretary Jensen hurried over, worry etched on his face. Behind him was the lawyer he’d just called.
The lawyer stepped aside to speak with the officers.
Tyler only shook his head, unable to say more.
A short distance away, Joyce and Felix sat together on a bench, talking in hushed voices.
“Honestly, I was terrified,” Joyce whispered. “I mean, I’ve faced helpless situations at work before, but this is the first time I’ve ever witnessed a murder scene.”
“You did everything right,” Felix assured her gently. “You called the police and an ambulance as soon as it happened, made sure the area was safe, and even started first aid. I’ve spoken to some colleagues—the victim is still being treated.”
“How is he?” Joyce asked urgently.
“It’s not looking good…” Felix’s voice was heavy.
“I heard they’ve cordoned off the area and started searching,” Joyce said, lowering her voice even more. “But from what I know, the car was abandoned near the woods out west. If the suspect ran into those hills, who knows…”
She was still talking when a shadow fell across her.
She looked up and saw Tyler standing nearby.
She jabbed a finger at Tyler’s chest. “Tyler, I told you that day—Emily was in a car accident. I begged you to come to the hospital, and when you finally did, you brought Vivienne with you!”
“Wasn’t it enough for Emily to get hit by a car? Did you have to bring her emotional wreckage too?”
The memory still made her seethe. She’d only realized after calling Tyler that Emily’s crash wasn’t just an accident—it was deliberate.
And as Emily’s husband, Tyler was a prime suspect.
“Tyler, I told you straight out—someone hit her on purpose. I even asked if it was you! How much clearer could I have been?” Joyce exploded.
Tyler opened his mouth, struggling for words. He wanted to say he’d thought it was all just some elaborate act, a trick on him. But in the end, he said nothing.
Felix, though, saw right through him.
“Joyce told me you thought Emily and she were faking it—putting on a show just to fool you.”
Tyler didn’t answer. He just stared at Joyce, the world around him feeling more unreal with every passing second.
