Sophia leaned her head against his shoulder, rubbing her tears into the fabric of his shirt. Her voice trembled as she sobbed, “You didn’t tell me anything. You just shut me out all of a sudden. Do you have any idea how worried I was? I kept thinking something awful happened to you here. Do you understand how scared I was?”
She clung to him, her whole body shaking with each sob.
Jason felt a sharp ache in his chest—an overwhelming wave of self-loathing. He turned and pressed a kiss to her cheek.
He couldn’t tell her that when he saw those photos, it wasn’t just anger he felt, but panic. Panic that if she met Robin, she’d be moved, that Robin might talk her into something. Panic that if she called him, he’d see the hesitation in her eyes through the screen.
Should he let her go, set her free? Or hold onto her, even if it meant being selfish?
He honestly didn’t know.
Time passed. Gradually, Sophia calmed, her head still resting on his shoulder, gazing out at the evening sky. The sun was setting, casting a golden light across the white-paned windows, filling the room with a peaceful hush.
In the midst of such tranquil beauty, even heartbreak seemed to soften.
Sophia sniffled, her voice barely above a whisper. “You still don’t trust me, do you?”
Jason’s reply was low and serious. “Sophia, do you love me?”
She bit her lip, her tone defiant. “No, I don’t!”
Jason frowned. He stood, looking down at her, taking in her puffy, red-rimmed eyes. The urge to interrogate her vanished in an instant.
Sophia leaned back against the wall, chin lifted. Her eyes, washed clear by tears, shone with a stubborn resilience.
“I’ll say it again—I’m done with Robin. I’ve told him everything; there’s nothing left unsaid. I won’t call, I won’t see him. That’s over.”
“You know, maybe we got together because you’re so damn persistent, but if I didn’t want this—no one could force me. Do you get that?”
“And besides, we already…” Her cheeks flushed crimson. She looked away, not finishing her sentence.
Jason’s eyes darkened with a tenderness he couldn’t hide. He lowered his voice. “Then make it up to me.”
